I’ve gone back and forth on whether to do this post or not but when I thought about the other ones I’ve read this month, I decided it’s just as interesting to hear about disappointing products as it is to hear about amazing ones. It should go without saying that I’m not posting this to be a troll, or to bash products that some people might have loved last year, they are just products which didn’t work for me.
Too Faced Love Eyeshadow Palette
I’m not as disappointed in this palette as I could have been, because in fairness I didn’t pay full price for it. I snapped this up in TK Maxx for just £15 and when you see Too Faced somewhere like that, you’ve gotta have it right? It’s not that the shadows or the eyeliner are bad, it’s just that I have not been inspired by it. In fact, I haven’t used it at all. There are no completely matte shadows in the palette so I can’t just reach for it alone and it feels like a lot of the shades are quite similar when swatched. The packaging is nice and the layout of shadows is really cute but that’s about all I’m hanging onto it for.
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% 30ml
I hauled and reviewed this back in November (read the full post here) and I mentioned then that it seemed to draw out a load of breakouts but then did nothing to clear them up afterwards. I’ve removed this completely from my regime as I just felt it did nothing good for my skin.
Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick in Secret Salma
This is going to make people feel a certain way because it seems that Charlotte Tilbury can do no wrong in the beauty community but this lipstick has to be one of my disappointing products. The colour is gorgeous, just the kind of deep pink I love to go for. But this is the most drying lipstick I’ve ever tried. Not only does it dry down on the lips, it seems to f*ck my lips up for days afterwards. The first time I tried it, I put the aftermath down to being dehydrated as it couldn’t possibly be my beautiful new lipstick but then it happened a second time and I started to question it. The third time was enough, and I’ve had to retire this lipstick to my acrylic storage to just sit there and look pretty.
Rimmel Volume Shake Mascara
When this launched, I don’t think I was alone in thinking – what a cool idea! A mascara which can be instantly refreshed by shaking it meaning it’s just as fresh from the first use to the last. In reality though, all that is pointless if the mascara formula and wand are crap. I don’t find that the brush coats my lashes well at all. The formula is quite wet so it sticks my lashes together before it can dry. When mascaras are like this, I want them to thicken and dry out a bit which makes the shaking mechanism redundant for me.
L’Oreal Infallible Total Cover Foundation
This has got to be one of the worst foundations I’ve ever tried. It just did not suit my skin at all. I stupidly didn’t check out the testers of this in store before buying, if I had have done that I would’ve known straight away it wasn’t for me. The texture is whipped and very mousse-like which reminds me of the old Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse which every teenage girl wore back in the day. Looking back now, I can’t believe I used to leave the house with that on my face. I remember the feeling of it and how awfully it sat on top of my skin. This L’Oreal foundation felt the same. It sat around my pores; it clung to dry patches I didn’t even know I had but then split and slipped around on oily zones; it was not a good look. I couldn’t wait to take it off at the end of the day and I haven’t tried it since.
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned
I reviewed a set of mini KVD ELL back in November (read the full review here) but at that point I hadn’t tried them all out. Every KVD ELL I’d tried at that point had been perfect, a little drying, but not a deal breaker. I tried the shade Damned when I went to a gig not that long ago. As I was driving there I could feel it drying but also it still felt kinda sticky. By the time I got there (probably an hour’s drive), I could just tell it must’ve looked horrendous so I went to the ladies room to check and it had started to crumble leaving purple flakes around my mouth, and what was left was not the lovely dark cherry shade I’d started with but a pink stain. All I could really do was try and rub some of it off with a tissue and then reapply some more on top but the result was patchy and not cute. I’ve since seen lots of lip swatch images where you can kinda see the pink staining around the lips so you can see what I mean.
Elf Blemish Control Primer
When Elf launched in the UK I was buzzing, I’d seen so many American YouTubers raving about their hidden gems and how inexpensive the products are. I had a look through the range and picked out a few things, one of them being this primer. I like anything that claims to be blemish control as at the age of 32, I’m still cursed with the skin I had as a teenager. One of my favourite primers is the Collection Primed and Ready Mattifying Pore Minimiser which contains witch hazel so I was hoping this would be just as good. It ain’t! It has a very chemically scent which isn’t pleasant. It is quite a nice texture but it does make my skin turn into an oil slick quite quickly. I also hadn’t found the claims of it helping to control breakouts and blemishes to be true.
There were a couple more products which really disappointed me, two which spring to mind are the Jeffree Star x Manny MUA Skin Frost in Eclipse (which I threw in the bin) and the MAC x Mariah Carey Extra Dimension Skin Finish in My Mimi (which I gave away to a family member) but as I didn’t have either of them to photograph I haven’t included them in full.
As I said at the start, I’m not here to bash anyone’s fave products, I just wanted to share my thoughts because not every product we try is going to be a hit. I try to keep it mainly positive on my blog, but every now and then I need to talk about some things which I didn’t love. So, did you try any disappointing products in 2017? Or do you have other feelings on the products I mentioned? Let me know in the comments below. As always, thank you so much for reading…
